About International English Language Testing System(IELTSTM)

The IELTSTM, or International English Language Testing System, is one of the world's most popular English language proficiency tests for non-native English speakers. It is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who want to study or work in environments where English is the language of communication.
IELTSTM is widely recognized and accepted by universities, employers, immigration authorities, and other professional entities in English-speaking countries, such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and many institutions in the USA. The test has two versions:

IELTSTM Exam Pattern

IELTSTM covers four basic language skills

Listening (30 minutes)

40 questions across Four recorded monologues and conversations. Aspirants appearing for paper based test are allowed an extra 10 minutes to transfer answers to the answer sheet. A range of accents, including British, North American and Australian accents, can be expected. Both Academic and General version of IELTSTM feature similar question types.

Reading (60 minutes)

Different for Academic (three long texts) and General Training (extracts from books, magazines, newspapers, notices, and advertisements), this section too includes 40 questions. No extra time is allowed for transfer of answers.

Writing (60 minutes)

Writing section includes two tasks. The first task is to be completed within 20 minutes and differs for Academic (describe a graph, chart, or diagram) and General Training versions (write a letter). The aspirant is expected to submit a response not less than 150 words in length. The second task (write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem) is similar on both versions of the test and must include not less than 250 words to be completed within 40 minutes.

Speaking (11-14 minutes)

Conducted in the form of a face-to-face interview, the speaking section includes short questions, speaking at length about a familiar topic, and a structured discussion.

Scoring

Scores are given in bands from 0 to 9, with 9 being an "expert" in English and 0 being a "did not attempt the test" score. The overall band score is the average of the four individual scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking).

Frequency and Availability

The IELTSTM test is available on 48 fixed dates a year, and test centres offer it up to four times a month. IDP is the sole distributor of the test in India and conducts the test once every week (on Saturdays for 3 weeks of a month and on Thursday for the remaining 1 week of the month. The order, however, is not fixed)

Validity

Typically, IELTSTM scores are considered valid for two years.
